2018-19 Season Offerings
Unless otherwise noted, all classes and workshops take place at St George’s Church Community room, 415 Piccadilly Ave, near Island Park Dr & Wellington W. Lots of parking.
Our adult programming is back! Monthly drumming classes with rotating instructors and repertoire are offered on the fourth Friday of each month from 7-9pm. All levels welcome. The first 30 minutes will be especially geared to warm-ups and technique and then into the amazing Ghanaian repertoire! Some singing and small groove movements also encouraged. Specific dates below. Cost is $25 per session or $100 in advance for 5 classes. You can use them at any monthly session this season. Classes are not transferable to a different person nor can they be carried over from year to year. Please register ahead to reserve/pay for your spot by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org

CHILDREN & YOUTH For the 2017-18 Season, our ROOTS classes for ages 7-12 will be offered in two 12 week sessions, one beginning in September and one beginning in January. Dates below. For ages 12-18 we have the performance-based Baobab Youth Performers that runs all season . We also have a summer day camp for ages 7-12 that includes volunteer opportunities for older youth. BAOBAB ROOTS CLASS:
This weekly class (ages 7-12yrs) focuses on developing creative expression through drumming, chant, movement, body percussion and visual art. Basic hand drumming and stick drumming techniques will be taught through repertoire from Ghana, including children’s game songs. Some singing, movement and cultural connections will also me made. Emphasis is given to ensemble playing and developing multi-levels of listening and non-verbal communication. Drums are provided. Each twelve-week session will culminate in a short public open house, and occasional opportunities may arise to perform in the community. No experience required!

Fall- September 19 -December 12 (no class on October 31) open house on week 12
Winter/Spring -January 16- April 10 (no class on March 13) open house on week 12

BAOBAB YOUTH PERFORMERS:
This group (for ages 12-18yrs) uses a performance-based music education model to engage students in the arts of Ghana. Drumming, singing and dancing provide an opportunity for musical and physical enjoyment in a community and social setting. This groups meets weekly (Wednesdays 4:30-6pm) from September through June. In addition to weekly rehearsals, there are numerous performance and workshop opportunities. For more info about the group, see the Youth Performers PAGE
Location: 415 Piccadilly Ave (St George’s Church) Cost: Please inquire for rate for the full season, September -June. First rehearsal is September 13. No experience required!
This season’s dates are August 12-16, 2019 from 9am-4pm
Location: Baobab Community Space, St George’s Church 415C Piccadilly Ave, Ottawa (Island Park & Wellington)
Activities include: West African drumming, singing, movement, visual art and cultural exploration. The week culminates in a food and performance celebration! We only hold camp one week in the summer so we put all our energy into creating a very special week!
Cost $225 (includes instruments and supplies, guests artists and Friday lunch)
